We were sad to hear about the passing of Chef Charles Phan. We loved the first original slanted door on Valencia Street. I was happy to find their location in Napa & wanted to give it a try & we were not disappointed. Started with papaya salad, it was light & refreshing, but it could use a little acidity, over very enjoyable. The second starter was Imperial Rolls, one of the best I ever had. Any restaurant that wraps with egg roll paper instead of rice paper is lazy & not legit. Wrapping with Rice paper is more time-consuming but is essential. Also please do not add taro to the imperial roll, it just ruins the taste. The slanted door imperial roll is done perfectly! Third was the chicken clay pot, which seemed simple, but so tasty. We add the sauce to the rice, yummy. Last but not least, the cellophane noodles with wild Dungeness & blue crab were amazing. I remembered having this dish at their Ferry building location, this dish here is even better. Great service from our server Danielle, she was attentive. We can't wait to go back & also like to try their Saturday & Sunday brunch.
Slanted Door, founded in 2004 by James Beard Award-winning chef and cookbook author Charles Phan, is a renowned restaurant that originally opened in San Francisco. It is now proudly serving Napa, located near the Oxbow Market and The Napa Wine Train station. Napa, celebrated for its wine, culinary arts, and vibrant music and visual arts scene, is the perfect setting for Slanted Door. It only makes sense that Phan's innovative blend of Vietnamese and California cuisines would find a home here in this iconic destination. You might wonder, "Why the high prices?" (and yes, they are on the higher side). Dining at Slanted Door isn't just about food--it's about experiencing the fusion of Vietnamese flavors with California's culinary innovation, a historical moment in fine dining. This is where it all began for Vietnamese fusion at a high level, a piece of culinary history in the making. The menu showcases Phan's Vietnamese fusion classics like Shaking Beef, fresh spring rolls, and Banh Mi fusion creations. Newer additions like Siu Mai (pork dumplings) and bao are also offered. For context, their Pho is priced similarly to the one at Napa Noodles on 1st Street, offering a point of reference for some of its pricing. We encourage you to visit Slanted Door and show your support for the restaurant and its legacy. Charles Phan, who sadly passed away in January 2025, will be deeply missed by the culinary community. His vision brought Vietnamese upscale California cuisine to mainstream dining and left an indelible mark on the food world. Suggestions /comments Chopstick Holders: Consider introducing chopstick holders that align with the upscale ambiance and prices. This small touch could enhance the overall dining experience and reflect the restaurant's premium setting. Pho: Broth was a little salty for my taste but I don't add salt to much of my food Siu Mai: -the best I've ever had and I am a dim sum snob; (it's pricier than all the others too so I expect it to be better) Happy Hour: (after reading others' reviews) Napa locals truly appreciate happy hours, especially given the high prices at many tourist spots. Offering great happy hour deals for Napa residents goes a long way in creating a sense of community.
Excellent beef pho, outstanding service by Jessica, and a wonderful ambiance during lunch on a Friday afternoon! This is our first dining experience at Napa's newest location. My daughter and I enjoyed a wonderful lunch here together. We'll be back. Highly recommend!
Update ... I left my credit card behind and they found it and are holding it for me. That is fantastic. Super quick response... I also need to say we went there for happy hour and dinner after an orchestra concert (Sunday) and we had a lovely visit. They were very accommodating to my guests who brought young children, The service was attentive and the food was delicious. It's a good team. I just miss a longer later. Happy hour. :-) Sierra (not Jessica ) is friendly, helpful Update happy hour is one hour and ends at 4pm, that's the reason for 3 stars ...Impossible to make if you're one of the workin' folks .... Free corkage on Monday still stands. 11:30 am is when they open - enjoy!
The family got together for a post-Christmas lunch. My sister found Slanted Door in Napa, which I had no idea. What a great idea, right in the hear of Wine Country. I ate at the original restaurant on Valencia way back in the late 90s. It was awesome. I've also eaten at the one on the Embarcadero in the mid 00s, also great. I am now 3-for-3 with the Napa location. It was just as great at the others. The food was excellent (check my pics) and the service was also excellent. My family tends to be needy and ask lots of questions and requires lots of help. It literally takes us 10 minutes to figure out the seating arrangement. Anyway, the good folks at the Napa location were wonderful and tended to our needs skillfully and courteously. It was a true testament of good hospitality. My poor words cannot do justice the food, so I will just show the pics. I will say that the Shaking Beef and Lemongrass Chicken were the family favorites.
My friend rented out the bar area for their birthday on a Saturday night in December from 7-10pm. We had a minimum to reach and we reached it before we started paying for our drinks and meals. I got there a little late so I didn't order food but I had some spring rolls and I heard the shaking beef was good. We all really enjoyed their Vietnamese coffee espresso martinis and others also enjoyed their mezcal mixed drinks. We got tons of shots of tequila and they have a cake cutting fee if you bring your own cake. Parking is easy because they have their own parking lot. They have somewhat of an outdoor bar area but it was closed since it was raining. Service was great, very friendly workers that were working hard for our large party. I'd like to come back to try some of their other dishes.
We had a private party inside a big room with cool decors and lighting. Our party of 9 enjoyed. Variety of starters and entrees to share. What stood out the most for me is the daikon rice cakes and the pomegranate dessert. Oh so heavenly. Our server WS attentive and gave recommendations to accommodate some dietary restrictions. I would come back to try some cocktails in the future.
So in love that Slanted Door is in Napa. I honestly think it's better than any of the locations. My fiancé and I usually go to the San Ramon and for some reason the Napa location just taste better the ambiance has a nice simplicity and zen vibe to it. The customer service was over the top and very attentive. Everyone was so kind and sweet. We ordered: Pho Chay - 5/5 fiancé love every bite of it he mentioned it's loaded with veggies, mushrooms, and all the extra stuff. He also mentioned the broth was very smooth. Pho Ga - 5/5 which I ordered and it was so refreshing taste love how it had a lot of herbs in mine and the broth taste so homemade and comforting. Love it so much. We also got the tofu spring rolls and we literally thought it was 5/5 and love every bite of it. It was so light and so airy, and the peanut sauce was perfection. We also ordered side of bak choy and the taste was mind blowing. It had the right amount of savory to it and the garlics had a nice touch to it. We will definitely come back over and over again.
Kaila was bartending and was extremely Knowledgeable of the menu. It was my first time here and I came at lunch. Most of their menu items are meant for sharing so she suggested I get a few half orders of things which was a great way for me to enjoy a few items. Vegetarian imperial rolls were delicious. Then had the daikon rice cake and. A few ribs. Would highly recommend coming here. Don't be shy of the menu, ask questions and be adventurous, you won't be sorry. The bar is really nice and the dining area is inside and outside with an open viewing kitchen. Definitely a stop when in Napa
